RAISING THE STAKES

ELEGANCE REIGNS ON RACE DAY

Most holidays call for casual fashions but our Adelaide Cup long weekend (March 8) is a more stylish affair.

For those heading to the track, elegant dresses and lightweight suits are the best bet.

Dressing up rather than down is never more appropriate than at the races, so splash out in bold colours, vibrant prints and luxurious fabrics.

This season rich shades of purple, emerald green and blue
are complemented by graphic black and white designs and animal prints.

Complete the outfit with a locally made hat or hair decoration.

FESTIVAL FLAIR

MATCH THE MOOD OF OUR VIBRANT FESTIVAL CITY WITH A SPLASH OF COLOUR

With the Adelaide Festival and Fringe launching this month, it’s time to cast aside black and white in favour of something more colourful.

Show some artistic flair with an unusual print, bold colour or embellished garment.

Summer trends such as crochet, denim and beading are still popular. Kaftans and maxi dresses are ideal for warm evenings and will make the transition from opera to a comedy show with ease.

FESTIVE FROCKS

TAKE A SIMPLE, YET ELEGANT APPROACH TO DRESSING THIS CHRISTMAS

Christmas brings a sense of occasion that requires a well considered outfit.

Unless you are celebrating at the beach, the swimsuit and kaftan you bought while Christmas shopping won’t be enough.

Opt for an elegant dress in one of the season’s bright hues, such as purple or blue, festive red or traditional black and white.

The season’s key dresses sit above the knee and come in a beautiful mix of printed fabrics which drape around the body.

Add accessories such as several layers of bangles, a cuff, cocktail ring or bold necklace.

Sydney designer Lisa Ho, who has just opened her first Adelaide boutique, says women want to wear something pretty but not be constrained by fashion.

“You still want to be able to play with the kids and eat!” she says.

Graphic prints are a strong look for summer. Lisa Ho chain link dress ($679), cow hair belt ($289), CC Skye bracelet ($235), thread bracelet ($355), Lisa Ho Boutique

DRESS TO IMPRESS

THE MAXI AND THE PLAYSUIT ARE SHAPING UP TO BE SUMMER’S HOTTEST LOOKS

Whatever your favourite fashion decade, chances are you will see elements of it on the streets this summer.

Styles from the ‘50s through to the ‘80s have influenced most labels resulting in shoulder pads, leggings, washed out denim and harem pants all being prominent again.

For the best showcase of what the season has to offer, don’t miss the BMW Adelaide Fashion Festival from November 18 to 21.

The event will include parades showing the work of our emerging designers as well as the latest high street looks, competitions and a very fashionable lunch.

All the details can be found at

BRIGHT OUTLOOK

STOCK UP ON COLOURFUL SEPARATES FOR SUNNY DAYS AHEAD

The dress has been a strong look for several seasons but this spring, separates are making a return. While mini and maxi dresses will still be popular for the hottest part of the year, our milder days will be dominated by cropped harem pants, shorts and skirts.

It is a season of contrasts between soft, flowing pieces and slim-fitting jackets and jeans.

Neutral zone

MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM WINTRY GREY TO SUMMER BRIGHTS WITH FASHIONABLE ITEMS IN SOFT, NEUTRAL SHADES

The start of spring is a much anticipated time on the fashion calendar. After months in sombre black and grey, all those colourful pieces are tempting.
One way to bridge the gap between seasons is with a mix of neutrals. They look great together but also work well against black and can be teamed with summer’s brighter shades as the season progresses.

Neutral shades are not only practical but they look great on any age.

1 Transit silk print dress ($545), trench ($895)

3 Anna Hoffmann silk-embroidered shirt ($218)

4 White linen is perfect for when the weather warms up.Charlotte: Anu white tiered dress ($440) Gordana:120% Lino shirt ($310), Paige jeans ($295)

Casual Day

STRIPES AND CHECKS ADD MUCH-NEEDED
COLOUR TO WEEKEND WEAR

While it doesn’t move at the same pace as women’s fashion, menswear does show some seasonal changes especially in casual collections.

Denim is strong with a variety of finishes, including faded skinny leg styles and straight leg jeans with an aged quality or a “distressed” finish that makes them look like they’ve been worn for years.

Sporty slim-fitting tees, logo tees, and hooded sweats are all popular, while elements of winter’s college style are continuing such as vests and zip-front knits.

For those heading out to lunch this Fathers Day (Sunday, September 6) – or keen to snap up a fashionable gift for the occasion – try some colour with a striped or checked shirt in shades of green and blue.

1 Vests have made a comeback in women’s and men’s fashion collections and are a practical solution to office heating. For weekend wear, they can be teamed with a T-shirt for a more casual feel. Striped shirt ($89.95), black pants ($109.95), vest, from Tarocash

2 For those seeking colour, green/blue shades are a fresh option. Striped shirt ($59.95), from Connor

3 This zip-front knit appeals to all ages because it can be worn as a classic or given a tough edge. It features a hood as well. Avatar T-shirt ($30), Premonition check shirt ($110), G-star hooded knit ($240), from Carbon

4 Checked fabrics have been popular this winter and look set to continue through spring. Jeans ($59.95), check shirt ($44.95) and T-shirt ($25), all from Ed Harry

5  Layering is a key look in any fashion story. The lightweight jacket is ideal for transeasonal wear. Stray jeans ($99.99), T-shirt ($49.99), check shirt ($79.99) and black jacket ($129.99), from Roger David
